OV-103 On display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. Named after a sailing ship that had pioneered scientific research, Discovery flew its first mission in 1984 and last in 2011 for a total of 39 spaceflights, more than any other Space Shuttle or spacecraft. It spent 365 days in space and clocked more than 238 million km. Reinforced carbon-carbon on the nose cone differs in color with the tessellation of 30,757 silica tiles forming the heat shield. 931884 On display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. This Fw-190 was built as an A-7 in late 1943. After battle damage, it was rebuilt as an F-8 Jagdbomber with new wings and bomb racks. It wears the code White 7 of I./SG2 operating on the Eastern Front in Oct. 1944. After its capture, it was shipped to USA but was not flown. (mehr von 931884)

9056 Only surviving Sparrowhawk of eight built to serve with airships USS Akron and USS Macon, this aircraft was restored to represent the time when airships acted as flying aircraft carriers. To recover, the pilot approached the airship slightly above stall speed and used the overhead hook to attach onto a trapeze. Hence the insignia "Men on the Flying Trapeze", visible on the fuselage. 42-13610 Experimental Autogiro on display in the Vertical Flight exhibition at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. These series of Autogiros were difficult to handle, leading to several accidents. The USAAF abandoned the Autogiro in favor of the more reliable Sikorsky helicopter. (mehr von 42-13610)

290202 On display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, NASM. The Uhu was the best night-fighter produced in World War II. Only 294 were constructed, but they achieved deadly results against Bomber Command and Mosquito intruders in the hands of aces like Werner Streib and Werner Baake. It was the world’s first operational aircraft fitted with ejection seats. This Uhu from I/NJG 1 was captured at Grove, Denmark. (mehr von 290202)

41-31773 'Flak-Bait' undergoing restoration at the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This B-26 flew 207 missions over Europe, the most by any USAAF bomber. Gen. Arnold decided to preserve this veteran of D-Day and missions against V-1 sites. Assigned to the 449th BS, 322nd BG, ‘Flak-Bait’ lived up to its name with over a thousand flak holes patched and every control surface replaced at least once. (mehr von 41-31773)

N7557L On display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. This Aerobat belonged to William K. Kershner, a highly respected instructor who authored five manuals on primary, advanced, aerobatic, instructor and instrument flying.
